Clay pigeon shooting tips
Clay pigeon shooting tips
Clay pigeon shooting is quite a fun recreational activity to do with shotguns. For some it may come easy, for others not so easy. It it all depends on the gun you are shooting, the ammunition, the aiming&shouldering, shotgun choke, and yourself. Some of the mot common shotguns that are used are over and under, however it does not matter. You can opt to use a semi, pump, or even single shot. Its all personal preference or it depends on how many targets you are planning to shoot.
For single shots it may present more of a challenge because you only got one shot. The only factor here is that if you are planning on shooting more than one clay bird you can not. Of course you could load another shell before the other clay bird fell, but this is only if you are some amazing sharpshooter that reloads in less than 0.5 second.
As for pumps and semis they are great because if you want to shoot multiple targets you have that choice. You can up the ante this way. Many clay birds can be loaded with 2 or the more expensive ones can keep shooting them out. So lets say you got 5 shots your friend can can keep pulling to see if you can hit them all.
Clay pigeon shooting tips “What choke to use”?
Depending on what type of challenge you want to give yourself this choice is mostly up to you. Most commonly used is the “improved choke”. The thing is with improved choke the shot spreads out first but disperses so fast is that your range is decreased. You may find yourself aiming at a far target and you miss simply cause there was not enough shot to damage it enough or reach it. Then theirs modified choke which I think is the best choke you can use, You get the best of both worlds. A fair amount of spread and a fair amount of distance. Full choke is sort of stupid to use unless you really want to challenge yourself but you normally would only use this for turkey or long distance waterfowl hunting. Ideally, improved cylinder and modified are the best choices.
Clay pigeon shooting tips “Aiming and shouldering”
The most important thing is to make sure you know how to shoulder a shotgun properly. Make sure you cheek is up against the stock and you are looking directly down the barrel and not above or below. You can even practice this having your shotgun down and raising it and quickly looking down the barrel at something. Not necessarily to shoot but just for practice. When you are aiming at a clay bird you have to remember you have to adjust your shooting for the angle it is at. For Example: If the clay pigeon is rising in front of you, you’ll want to aim just slightly under it to hit it. If it is falling down you will want to aim below it. You will have to get a feel for this, it all takes practice.
Shooting a clay bird is normally easiest when it is rising because when it is falling its harder to “follow through with it”. If you are shooting 2 clay birds you may find yourself shooting one that is rising up at an angle then you aim at the other to see it is falling. Its good to get practice shooting at these different angles.
2 clay pigeons
Choosing shotgun barrel length
You will find it easier to shoulder and swing a shotgun with a shorter barrel. It is a lot more difficult to shoot clay pigeons with a longer barrel simply because its more difficult to swing with the extra length and weight. You may want to take this into account. As for me I have a 20 gauge Remington 870 and a 12 gauge Mossberg 535. I would rather choose the 870 than the mossberg because the my 870 has a shorter barrel and stock. Try to use whats most comfortable for you. Normally opting to go with a shorter barrel is the way to go when shooting clay birds.
Clay pigeon shooting tips outlined
-Always try and use a shorter barrel
-Follow through, If you just shot one clay and there is another in air to shoot, be sure not to lower the gun: continue to look down the barrel while moving it to the other target
-Practice Shouldering and looking down the barrel
-Improved or modified choke are recommended chokes
-When the clay is rising aim low not above
-When the clay is falling aim lower but lower than you normally would cause it is faster
-Use 2 3/4 shells because you don’t want to spend to much money for this purpose (3 inch mags are for hunting purposes)
-Try different angles such as having the clay shoot a little to the right or left to help you get used to shooting at different angles
-Practice practice practice
Clay pigeon shooting tips “Whats a good clay thrower to buy”?
Depending on how much you are willing spend, the answer is up to you. You can get hand thrown throwers that you have to have someone throw for you. These are cheapest but not the best. You can get single arm thrown ones which would is probably the standard thrower. You pull back the arm and pull back the string and it launches. Most of these should be able to shoot 2 but beware sometimes they will break with the force of the launcher. In my experience this will happen sometimes. You will have to find the “sweet spot”.For the more luxurious throwers there are ones that stack a large quantity of pigeons and can be continually launched by a pedal. These can be quite expensive though.
Also be sure not leave throwers outside such as the single arm ones cause this can cause rust or it will irritate the spring. I left mine out for quite a few years, it lasted a while but it got worse over time. The spring is no longer good. Its best to put them back. Its okay to have them out for days at a time just don’t leave them out when its real cold. I had mine underneath a table which helped a bit but it will last longer stored properly.
Some clay throwers
Hand thrown(cheap)a few bucks Single arm thrown powered by spring. These are(Moderate priced)you should be able to get one of these less than 100$ Auto feed electric (expensive)100s of dollars
A great activity
I hope I provided you with some information on clay bird shooting. It is a fun activity that takes practice. For some it will come faster than others. Just remember to shoot a gun that your comfortably following through with and try different shot sizes and chokes. Determine what is the ultimate combination for shooting clays. This will also help you in the field when shooting real birds. It gives you practice.
Just something to add. If you find you miss some of the clays thrown they may not be broke when hitting the ground. You can check and find some that are unscathed and use them again. This saves some money and is like recycling them again since you missed them. Also be sure to carry clay pigeon boxes carefully as they are very fragile and break easy.
Trap shooting is a sport that has been going on for decades. It will live on just be sure to be safe when you are shooting. Choose a safe location and be safe with firearms.

Basketball Shooting – Learn How to Shoot a Free Throw and Become a Good Shooter
Basketball Shooting – Learn How to Shoot a Free Throw and Become a Good Shooter
Any ball player will tell you that games are won and lost on free throws. A free throw is a shot in basketball that a player gets after they are fouled. It is a direct and unguarded shot from 15-feet away from the hoop. You get two free throws if your shot does not go in the hoop after the foul.
Free throws are an important part of playing basketball. I believe everyone can become a good shooter. To be a good free throw shooter, you have to make sure that you’ve mastered certain techniques with correct instruction on the fundamentals of basketball shooting, combined with drills and practice. This page will discuss the fundamentals of good basketball shooting form and instruct you in the best methods to sink your free throw. The principles are discussed below should be used as guidelines and may be helpful in correcting a player who is struggling with his/her basketball shooting, or is just learning to shoot.
1. Stance: Have your feet about shoulder width apart. Your knees should be bent a little as your thigh muscles will provide power for your shot. If you shoot right-handed, your right foot should be slightly forward. Your shoulders and body should be square to the hoop or find out which is most comfortable for you. Probably the important thing here is that when you jump to shoot, jump straight up but not sideways or backwards. Stay balanced.
2. Holding the ball: Use both hands to hold the ball, but only your basketball shooting hand which will actually propel the ball forward. Don’t shoot two-handed. Your shooting hand is the platform and should be underneath the ball with your wrist cocked back. Your other hand helps support or balance the ball, but does not enter into the actual shooting of the ball. Your non-basketball shooting hand should actually come off the ball just before you release the ball, so that you are shooting with one hand. Use your fingertips, not palms, to hold and release the ball.
3. Set Point: The set point is where you position the ball just prior to releasing the shot. If you are right-handed and shoot with your shoulders and feet square to the hoop, have the ball to the right of your face, a little toward the right shoulder. Don’t line the ball up in the center of your face, as this may result in your basketball shooting elbow flying away from your body, and could actually cause your wrist to turn sideways when you release the ball, imparting a side-spin. On the other hand, if you are more comfortable shooting with your body turned in toward the basketball shooting side, and then the set point can be more in front of your face. You will have to find which method works best for you. Also, it is best that the ball is as high as your forehead, or even higher in order to keep your basketball shooting from being blocked.
4. Upward Force: Most of the power in your shot should come from the upward force of your jump or the upward force from your thighs moving upward. You should not try to power up longer shots with your arm. Let the big muscles in the legs do the work. Release your shot on the upward force of the jump, not on the way down.
5. Aiming the ball: Pick out a spot to aim at either the back of the rim, or just over the front of the rim, or the backboard. Concentrate on this spot, and don’t look at the ball, or the flight of the ball.
6. Releasing the ball: Take the deep breath, and shoot. Use the shoulder as a “hinge”. Your basketball shooting arm extends forward toward the hoop, the elbow extends and then you release the ball with a snap of the wrist, with the ball rolling off your fingertips. This will impart backspin that all good shooters have. Backspin makes the ball land softly on the rim, and often creates a favorable “shooter’s” bounce, resulting in a score even though the shot was not perfect.
7. Follow Through: Make sure to follow through with your shot! This will help you get arc, rotation, and consistency. Keep looking at the basket and hold your basketball shooting hand in the “gooseneck”, follow-through position until the ball goes through the net.
This is important in getting the proper rotation (back spin) on the ball. Your fingers should be pointing toward the hoop, and your wrist bent forward, in a “goose neck” fashion. Hold this release after your shot until the ball hits the rim. You will notice that with a proper follow-through, the palm of your hand will be facing downward toward the floor. If it is turned sideways with the back of the hand facing outward, then you are incorrectly twisting your wrist during the release. Remember to keep your eye on the target… don’t watch the flight of the ball.
Tips
1. It is important for you to concentrate. Block out all the factors and just focus on your technique and making the shot.
2. Get into a routine. Take a few dribbles or take a deep breath- whatever makes you feel comfortable before you take the shot. Make sure to stick to the same routine every time. A routine helps program your body and mind and that will help with your consistency.
3. Don’t think too much. Even if you are in a slump, approach the line with the same routine and believing that you will make the shot.
4. Practice makes perfect! Repetition is the key to success in basketball shooting free throws. The more you shoot the more comfortable and confident you will become!
The ability to hit free throws is one of the most important skills to have as a good basketball shooting player. A foul shot can determine the outcome of a game. Increasing your vertical reach on a basketball court can help you become a better ballplayer. If you’re able to jump higher than other players, you have a better chance of grabbing rebounds, elevating higher toward the hoop or blocking your opponents’ shots. The Vertical Jump Manual is an “all in one” vertical jump training providing you with absolutely everything you need to achieve your maximum vertical jump! Take advantage of it now!

Basketball Shooting Drills ? 3 Essential Things your Shooting Drills Should Do
Basketball Shooting Drills ? 3 Essential Things your Shooting Drills Should Do
Every coach wants to see every player on the team progress and become good shooters. They want to see decent form, accuracy and consistency. And it isn’t difficult to convince players that practice is a good thing – walk past any basketball court on a Saturday morning, and if there isn’t a game on there will be players scattered around the baskets practicing their shot. Maybe even practicing their shooting form like their coach told them.
But shooting in a practice or by yourself at a neighborhood court is very different to shooting in a game. In a game, a player’s shooting form needs to be automatic – they can’t be thinking about how to shoot, trying to get their elbows under the ball, gauging the arc needed. The shooting technique needs to come naturally, which is why coaches stress perfect practice, over and over.
It’s called muscle memory – if you make your muscles perform in the same way, same set of movements, repetitively, they will naturally perform those movements whenever the player starts the shooting motion. Basic shooting drills need to emphasize this – good mechanics, good form, every time.
But there are a few other aspects to shooting – other than decent shooting form – that are necessary for shooting success in a game, and this is what your more advanced shooting drills need to accomplish. More advanced shooting drills need to include focus on:
1. A quick release. When an offensive play is run well, and a player is able to ditch his defensive man by running him off a pick or giving him a good fake, the offensive player will pop into position alone, ready for the pass. But he’ll only have a second or two alone, and so when that pass comes, the offensive player needs to be ready to turn and fire immediately – not rushed, but calm and smooth. To be calm and sure when shooting under fire, the player needs to practice like this – he needs to practice receiving the pass, squaring to the hoop, bringing the ball up and shooting – all in one clean, quick motion. Because if he waits any longer, the defense will be on him.
2. Good court vision. Sometimes it’s a good time to shoot; sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes it’s better to fake and drive. And sometimes someone else is in a better position to shoot and they should get the pass. Good court vision means seeing what is happening all around you, and adjusting accordingly. Have players run drills in which they have to choose – e.g., in one-on-one situations, if the defensive man charges, the offensive player fakes a shot and drives on him; but if the defensive man lays back, the offensive player takes the shot. Practice reading the defense.
3. Choosing your shot. Players need to shoot from where they would in the game. Big men will rarely be taking three point shots; similarly, guards will rarely be trying a drop step inside the key. Why waste valuable practice time teaching skills to players who will almost certainly not be given the opportunity to use them in a game.
A player on the court who can’t be trusted to shoot is a black hole for the team – nobody wants to give him the ball. And while good form is important to a consistent shot and needs to be taught and reinforced, if a player doesn’t have a quick release, an eye for the court, and a knowledge of his shooting strengths, even the best form will fall flat more times than not.
Choose shooting drills that provide opportunity for your players to do this if you want them prepared for the game. For more basketball shooting drills, check out Basketball Shooting Drills from the Better Basketball Coaching website.

How to Become a Model – The Photo Shoot Assignment!
How to Become a Model – The Photo Shoot Assignment!
What is a photo shoot?
A photo shoot can also be called an “assignment”. It is worth noting though that an assignment can be more than just a photo shoot, or not one at all. It could be a “cat walk” assignment (usually called runway) or a “promotional” assignment (where models stand about smiling a lot).
Always make sure that you know what your assignment actually is. You can do this by looking at the brief which you will have been given. North West Model Agency will always give their models a briefing sheet before the undertake a job.
One important point which a lot of models fail to consider is the number of people involved in a photo shoot. It is unlikely to be just you and a photographer. North West Model Agency suggests you expect at the very least three people.
Generally speaking the more senior the photographer the more assistants they will have. The assistant photographers will be in charge of making sure the equipment is set up correctly and will sometimes do ‘test’ shots to make sure the lighting is correct before the proper shoot. There can be more than one technical assistant on a larger shoot.
As well as the photographer there is likely to be the person who is commissioning the shoot, or a representative from the company. They are unlikely to get too involved in what is going on, but bear in mind they are the people paying the wages. What they say, goes.
Time is money in the modeling world, and it is in the interests of the commissioning party to get the best shots from the models in the smallest amount of time. This will have the effect that most of the models for the day will not be staggered i.e. they will all be milling about with stylists.
If you decide to take a chaperone, ensure they do not interfere with the shoot and they do not get in the way. If you are unhappy with something (which you should not be, having read the brief) inform whoever is in charge. It would be career suicide to allow a chaperone to get into an argument with anyone, bear this in mind if you think taking a girlfriend or boyfriend along with you. They are there to make sure you are safe and take you home, not to argue with any of the staff or get in the way.
The Photo Shoot Brief.
North West Model Agency will always produce a photo shoot brief for their models. This is not something all agencies do, and it is certainly unlikely that any work you find yourself will provide a photo shoot (or assignment) brief sheet.
The photo shoot brief will determine what the shoot is for, its outcome, the location and contact details of the person in charge or assigned liaison officer. North West Model Agency use a pro forma briefing sheet which will be filled in for you. You will also need to sign it to say you have understood the brief.
This way all parties know what to expect and the photo shoot will go smoothly and in a professional manner. North West Model Agency’s reputation is based on three core principles: Gold Standard, Professional Conduct and On Time. We expect all our models to adhere to these principles and North West Model Agency in turn treat the models to the same standards.
Where can they be?
Photo Shoot – “The Studio”
Photographers generally need an area where they can control light. The best way to do this is to use a full service studio. Studios can range from the very small (think a small lounge in a house) to the massive (think aircraft hanger).
Generally most shoots will be in a studio somewhere in between the two. A lot of older buildings in cities have been turned into photographic studios as they are cheap and have a large amount of space.
Within a studio there is likely to be a white room. This is literally a room which is white and allows the photographer to get quick shots without any backdrops spoiling the view. Most glamour modeling shots will be taken in a studio like this as it is easier for the photographer / editor to edit the finished photograph. Think “Zoo” or “Nuts” cover. White rooms are also good for test shots for Fashion photography before going outside on an expensive shoot. They allow the photographer to see how good the fashion items look on the model.
Studio’s can contain lots of other types of room, but the white room is generally the stock and trade as it allows backdrops to be brought in.
If you are doing body part modeling this is almost always done in a studio with speicficallly controlled lighting.
Photo Shoot – “On Set”
Set modeling lies somewhere between studio modeling and outside modeling. Usually this will be in an inside location, but not actually a professional studio. The reason for this as while a studio environment is ideal to control light sources, it is not always practical to try and build a set in a small studio given the time and cost this would incur.
The photographer / director will have to make a judgement call about using a location. The lighting is not usually as predictable as a studio but you can still control much of what is needed using reflection boards and lighting rigs.
On set modeling can be used for literally anything. From a photograph for an IKEA catalougue to a sexy glamour shoot in a fancy hotel. The list for set photography is endless, and will largely depend on the reason for the shoot.
A disadvantage with set photography is the locations are not designed to have large numbers of technical and model personnel in one space. The photography may also be slower and more frustrating if various shots need to be taken in various areas all the equipment will need to be moved.
Photo Shoot – “Outside”
As any professional photographer will tell you, natural sunlight makes for a superb shot. Natuaral sunlight however is not a variable which is easy to control; this makes out-door shoots harder than their studio or on set counterparts.
Be prepared for long waits and cancelled assignments if the weather turns bad. Also remember to wrap up warm if it is cold, having organized freezing photo shoots in Liverpool’s Albert Dock straight after an assignment in the Liverpool Echo Arena North West Model Agency suggests taking a warm coat every time.
Any photographic or promotional material coming out for summer will probably have been taken at least in the winter. Those happy looking models on a beach playing volley ball in this seasons sports gear may well have been freezing. It is not always glamorous to be a model and quite often it can be boring if you’re forced to sit around for long periods of time.
..and Beyond
It is worth remembering that you can literally get sent on an assignment anywhere. The best way to think is if someone has been there, they might want a photo shoot there. While it would be great fun to spend time in Antigua on a Glamour Shoot, or Milan on a Fashion assignment, most shoots will be studio and UK based.
Photo Shoot Preparation
The amount of preparation you will have to undertake will depend on the brief. Generally speaking photo shoot preparation takes numerous forms:
Make sure you get to the shoot early. Always take an umbrella. If you have had your hair done, the rain will quickly undo it. If female, take some make-up. You never know if the stylist will turn up. Phone the photographer / agency if you are going to be late. Do not get your hair cut before the shoot unless the shoot organizers know about it (or you are doing a body part shoot). Take bottled water with you and lunch. Keeping hydrated is important! There can be lots of sitting about doing nothing so take a book. Avoid MP3 players as you will need to be listening out to when your call comes in. Missing this will only frustrate the technical crew.
Will I get paid?
This is the age old question which we have covered in other articles. North West Model Agency will always agree a fee with you before you take an assignment. There are times when a fee is not appropriate, but you will know in advance.
It is North West Model Agency’s promise to you that you will get paid where agreed (in the same way that you promise to turn up to the shoot on time with a professional attitude).
Not all work is paid work. If you are starting out modeling many models will do free photography to build up their portfolio. This has pros and cons. Remember that a “free” photo shoot may actually end up costing YOU money depending on location. Also consider what happens if the photographer does not turn up or they decide not to give you the prints?
While it may seem like a cheap and easy solution, going into modeling without an agency such as North West Modeling Agency it may actually lead you to losing money and reputation.
What will the photos be used for?
The first question anyone going into modeling must ask themselves is “Am I comfortable with my parents / sister / gran seeing the photos I am going to have taken”? If the answer is “No” you’re in the wrong business, and this article has just saved you a whole lot of heartache.
Unless you are a top model it is very unlikely you will be able to dictate what will happen to your photographs. This is usually the contract you enter into: you get paid, the photos will be used for whatever purpose they have been intended. They may even be sold onto a 3rd party or licensed.
While it is great to think that your photo will appear on the front cover of Vogue, it is worth having a think about some of the other publications they may appear in, including online ones. Basically once it’s out there, you do not have any control what happens to it.
Is it safe?
Always make sure you know where you are going and how you are going to get back.
The brief North West Model Agency will give you will have this information on, but many private shoots do not have the same regard for their models safety. As assignments can last all day it is possible that late night travel will be in order. Even if you have your own transport, make sure you park in a well lit area as close to the assignment venue as possible and let someone know where you will be and what time you are expected back.
Photo Shoot Conclusion
You should find photo assignments for all types of modeling fun. It’s why you’re doing it right? Saying that as with any job the hours can be long, and the pay might not be much especially when you are starting out. Seeing your professional taken picture in a magazine or on a funky website however takes a lot of beating, and most models just do not get that far. Make sure you are represented properly and you know what you are going to be doing. If you are interested in becoming a model, get in touch with North West Model Agency. www.northwestmodelagency.com
